The Value of Connections: Beyond the Stage
There’s something electric about a room full of professional speakers. The lights, the energy, the stories told with power and precision, it’s easy to believe that’s where the magic happens and don’t get me wrong, there were some EXCEPTIONAL speakers on the main stage. But for me this year, the real value of a summit was found in the spaces in between, at breakfast, over a cuppa coffee, in the bar, even in my swimsuit in the Spa and during those unexpected moments when we stop talking at each other and start talking with each other.
The Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Speakers
The beauty of a gathering like this is not in the individual brilliance of each presenter, but in the collective impact of shared experience. Each speaker brings their own message, their own energy, their own story and as Bryony Thomas reminded us in her keynote “no-one knows your story” so we need to share. And in this sharing is where ideas collide, connect and grow through conversation, something bigger is born.
This is the human equation at work: 1 + 1 = 3.
Because the whole truly is greater than the sum of its parts, the quote attribute to Aristotle.
Where Real Conversations Happen
Yes, the stage gives us a platform, but connection gives us depth. It’s in the queue after a great keynote where someone says, “That really resonated with me…”
It’s in the networking break where two people realise they’ve faced the same challenge in different industries.
It’s in those quiet, authentic exchanges where egos fade and curiosity takes over. Giving space to others to talk, to get to know each other, trust me, running your own business can be a very lonely space to these gatherings form me are so powerful.
That’s where understanding grows. That’s where ideas turn into partnerships, connections turn into collaborations and inspiration turns into action.
Different Voices, Equal Space
In any group but especially among speakers, there will always be louder voices. The high-energy storytellers, the natural performers, the confident extroverts who thrive in the spotlight. Their passion pulls people in.
But just as important are the reflective thinkers, the ones who listen deeply, process slowly and speak only when they have something truly meaningful to say.
When we create spaces where every style feels seen and valued, we move from performance to partnership. The Speaking Business Summit does this for me and I know many of my other speaker tribe too.
Connection Is the Real Currency
At a summit like this, the applause fades but the conversations linger.
The real impact comes from the network built between sessions, not just the notes taken during them. Because the most powerful messages aren’t always delivered from behind a microphone; they’re spoken quietly, honestly, human to human, reflections of the back of listening to a keynote, asking another “what did you take from that talk?”
So next time you attend or speak at a summit, don’t just aim to be heard, aim to hear. Ask the question that makes someone pause. Give space for others to speak.
Because the value of connection isn’t measured by how many people listen to us, it’s measured by how deeply we listen to them.
And that’s where true influence begins not in the big room, but in the real conversations that follow.
A message I was sent after the event by someone who attended for the first time and I asked for their reflections “Put simply, your words at the start of the event were profound, as the event went on and I realised more and more the real value is on the conversations in between the sessions.”

Rethinking resilience at the top
Burnout in the boardroom, the leadership team or amongst the staff isn’t just a whisper anymore, it’s a full-blown alarm bell
