Self-Love is not Selfish

Self-love is often misunderstood and for some,  the idea of prioritising themselves feels indulgent or even selfish. Society has conditioned us to believe that putting others first is a value we should all hold at the highest and while kindness and generosity are essential, they should not come at the expense of our own well-being. True self-love is not about neglecting others; it is about nurturing ourselves so that we can show up as the best version of ourselves for those around us.

So why do we struggle with Self-Love?
The struggle with self-love is deeply rooted in cultural and societal expectations. From a young age, we are praised for being selfless and accommodating. The narrative that being ‘good’ means sacrificing our own needs for others leads to guilt when we even consider self-care.

We often equate self-love with arrogance or selfishness. The fear of being seen as self-absorbed prevents many from embracing their needs. However, self-love is not about placing yourself above others in a hierarchal manner, it is about recognising that you are worthy of care, respect and kindness.

The power of Self-Love
When we learn to truly love ourselves, we experience a profound shift in how we interact with the world

Stronger Relationships: When we prioritise self-care, we bring a healthier, more balanced version of ourselves to our relationships.
We stop seeking validation from others because we validate ourselves first.

Increased Resilience: People who practise self-love are better equipped to handle setbacks and challenges because they cultivate inner strength and self-compassion.

Improved Mental Well-being: When we treat ourselves with kindness, we reduce stress, anxiety and self-doubt, fostering a more positive mindset.

Greater Productivity: When we are physically and mentally recharged, we perform better in our personal and professional lives.

How to unlock the art of Self-Love (without feeling selfish)

  1. Reframe Your Mindset
Rather than seeing self-love as selfish, view it as essential maintenance. Just as you charge your mobile to keep it running, you need to recharge yourself to function effectively. Without self-care, you cannot show up fully for others.
  2. Set Healthy Boundaries
Learn to say no without guilt. Protecting your energy is crucial and setting boundaries ensures that you do not overextend yourself. This is not about rejecting others but about ensuring that your commitments align with your well-being and core values (do you know what those are? Reach out if you need help)
  3. Practice Self-Compassion
Speak to yourself with the same kindness and encouragement you would offer a close friend. Recognise the inner critic and remind it that we need some praise. Also take time to exercise, read, mediate or simply rest.  5. Celebrate Your Wins
  4. Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Self-appreciation fosters confidence and reinforces your sense of worth.
  5. The Ripple Effect of Self-Love
When you embrace self-love, you not only improve your own life but also inspire those around you to do the same. It creates a ripple effect where healthier individuals contribute to healthier relationships, workplaces and communities.

Self-love is not a luxury – it is not SELFISH —it is a life necessity. When you take care of yourself, you have more energy, patience and love to give to others. It is time to shift the narrative and understand that loving yourself is not selfish; it is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and those around you.
